The power gets put down through a new eight-speed version of Porsche’s excellent dual-clutch PDK transmission. Under the skin, the new 911 gets an updated version of the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six offering a modest increase of 23 horsepower and nearly half a second shaved off the base model’s 0-to-60 time. Inside, an extensive but tasteful cockpit overhaul includes replacement of all but one manual gauge with flat-screen simulations. Unfortunately, the rather elegant grille is somewhat sullied by a cheap-looking and haphazardly placed brake light. A single light strip connects more menacingly squinting taillights beneath an all-new vertically oriented engine grille. Perhaps the most dramatic styling distinction is in the back. The new 911 is also wider and sits on larger wheels. The overall shape is virtually identical, though the new car is stretched almost an inch on the same wheelbase.
Starting up front, the hood gets a subtle sculpted crease (a nod to ’70s 911 design), while the lower air vents take a more angular shape. You will really have to squint to see most of the external tweaks. When it does, it will continue the relatively slow evolution of one of the world’s fastest and sexiest sports cars.
